How to Resolve Inaccurate Availability Fast

A product can be available in Shopify at 9:00am, sell out at 9:04am, and still be advertised as in stock long enough to trigger a Google Merchant Centre issue. To resolve inaccurate availability, you need to correct more than one field in a feed. Google must see consistent stock information across your product data, landing page and checkout journey.

For a Shopify retailer relying on Shopping ads, this is not a minor housekeeping task. Inaccurate availability can block individual products from serving, weaken feed quality and, where it points to wider site reliability problems, contribute to more serious policy action. The right response is a controlled audit, not repeated resubmissions while the underlying mismatch remains live.

What an inaccurate availability issue means

Google Merchant Centre compares the availability value submitted in your feed with the availability displayed on the product landing page. It also assesses whether a shopper can realistically buy the item. If the feed says `in_stock` but the page says sold out, has no working purchase option or changes by location without clear handling, Google may disapprove the item.

The same principle applies in reverse. Marking an item as unavailable in the feed while displaying it as purchasable on the site can also create a mismatch. Microsoft Merchant Centre and Microsoft Ads work from similar expectations, so a fix should not be limited to one platform if both channels use the same Shopify catalogue.

Availability is more nuanced than a simple stock number. Pre-order items, backorders, variants, bundles and products supplied from third-party warehouses all need accurate treatment. A product that can technically be ordered is not automatically in stock under feed policy. The value must reflect the actual fulfilment position and what the customer is told before payment.

Find the source before changing the feed

The fastest safe route is to identify which source is sending the wrong information. In Shopify, stock status may be influenced by inventory tracking, inventory locations, sales channel availability, product status and variant-level settings. The feed may then be created by the Google & YouTube app, another feed app, a scheduled file or a custom API integration.

Start with the affected product IDs in Merchant Centre, rather than searching your whole catalogue at random. Compare the item shown in the Diagnostics report against the exact live product URL. Check the selected variant as well. A parent product can look available while the advertised size, colour or pack option is unavailable.

Then establish the chain of data. Ask these questions in order:

  • Does Shopify show sellable stock for the affected variant?
  • Is the product published to the relevant sales channel and market?
  • What availability value appears in the feed source?
  • Does the landing page show the same status to a signed-out visitor?
  • Can that visitor add the item to basket and proceed towards checkout?
This matters because changing a Merchant Centre feed manually will not hold if Shopify or an app overwrites it at the next sync. Equally, editing Shopify stock will not fix a website theme that displays an outdated availability message.

Check the version a customer sees

Do not rely only on the Shopify admin preview. Open the live page in a private browser window and test it on mobile as well as desktop. Check the market and currency used for the affected Merchant Centre target country. International stores can show different inventory, availability text or add-to-cart behaviour depending on a visitor's location.

Also look for cached pages. A theme, app or content delivery layer can retain an old stock message after the inventory has changed. If Google crawls that version, your feed can be correct while the landing page still fails the comparison.

Correct Shopify and feed availability together

Once you know the source, make the correction at the level that controls the data. For normally stocked products, Shopify variant inventory and the feed's `availability` attribute should agree. If stock reaches zero, the product should either be removed from advertising promptly or submitted as `out_of_stock`.

Where you intentionally accept orders before stock arrives, use the appropriate pre-order or backorder handling only when the customer-facing page clearly states the position. The expected delivery information must be credible and consistent with your shipping policy. Calling a product in stock because a supplier might dispatch it later creates unnecessary risk.

Variant mapping deserves particular care. A feed can submit a group of variants under one item ID, or accidentally use the parent product's status for all child variants. Check each advertised SKU. If only one size remains, the feed must not present every size as available simply because the parent listing has stock.

For dropshipping and supplier-led catalogues, set a realistic stock update routine. Supplier inventory feeds can lag, and a daily sync may be insufficient for fast-moving products. There is a commercial trade-off: more frequent updates reduce disapprovals and cancelled orders, but may require better app configuration or a more reliable inventory source. Selling fewer products accurately is usually better than advertising a catalogue that cannot fulfil consistently.

Do not forget checkout restrictions

Google assesses the practical buying journey. An item may appear in stock but fail because it cannot be delivered to the target country, the checkout blocks the postcode, or the product is only available to a customer group that is not stated on the landing page.

Test the journey using the same country settings as your product feed. Confirm shipping rates, delivery areas and any minimum order rules. If a product has regional restrictions, make those restrictions clear and avoid targeting it where it cannot be purchased.

Allow time for updates, then verify the result

After a correction, trigger or wait for the next scheduled feed fetch, depending on your setup. Merchant Centre needs to process the new data and may crawl the landing page again before the disapproval clears. Changing fields repeatedly during this window can make diagnosis harder.

Use the product-level status and Diagnostics area to confirm that the corrected value has been received. Check several products that share the same configuration, not only the original example. A single issue often reveals a catalogue-wide rule, such as a broken inventory-location mapping or a feed app defaulting unavailable variants to `in_stock`.

If automatic item updates are enabled, review what they are doing rather than assuming they have solved the problem. They can help correct limited mismatches, but they are not a substitute for a reliable source feed and accurate landing pages. Persistent differences can still lead to disapprovals.

When a review request is appropriate

A review request makes sense after the root cause has been fixed across the affected range and you have checked the live customer experience. It is not a shortcut for an unresolved feed problem. If the same discrepancies remain, a review is likely to fail and valuable time is lost.

Keep a brief record of the work completed: which inventory settings changed, which feed rules or app settings were corrected, the affected product categories, and the checks made on live pages and checkout. This creates a clear basis for explaining that the issue has been addressed if Google requests a review or the problem forms part of a wider account suspension.

If inaccurate availability sits alongside missing delivery information, misleading promotions, broken policy pages or account-level enforcement, treat the store as a whole. Fixing one attribute may restore a few items, but it will not resolve broader trust and compliance concerns.

Pulserig GMC Compliance & Ads Rescue can manually audit the Shopify setup, feed behaviour, landing pages and account evidence before preparing a review or appeal. Google and Microsoft retain final approval authority, but a properly evidenced correction gives the account the strongest practical route back to compliant advertising.

The useful standard is simple: advertise only what a real customer can buy, at the price and availability shown, in the market being targeted. Keep that standard in place after the disapproval clears, and inaccurate availability is far less likely to interrupt revenue again.
